The Science Behind BWRT

Our psychological responses to every situation begin in our subconscious about half a second before we are consciously aware of them. This is because our subconscious mind (reptilian or basal brain) works much faster that our conscious mind (neo-cortex). So our subconscious mind determines how we react to life's situations, and by the time we are consciously aware of something, we have already reacted. The problem is that our subconscious mind doesn't really think before it "acts" - it just "re-acts", i.e. it does the same thing it has always done in similar situations. These pre-programmed reactions may have worked in the past, but they aren't always appropriate or helpful in the present. BWRT works in this half-second "cognitive gap" by changing the subconscious mind's old, unhelpful, default re-action to a new, more helpful and more appropriate one. So, when the conscious mind becomes aware of the situation, it receives a helpful and appropriate message, instead of the unhelpful (angry, anxious, depressive, deficient or shameful) message it used to receive.


Anxieties, phobias and addictive behaviours often make no rational sense because they originate and are sustained before the rational mind is consciously aware of what is occurring. The conscious mind remains unaware of all subconscious activity, so the conscious mind cannot undertand, question or control the subconscious mind.


We can't decide to not feel anxiety or anger, because by the time we are consciously aware of it, it is already happening, so we can't deny it. Symptoms occur as a result of the basal brain routing its reaction via the limbic system to create anxiety. All symptoms (anger, fear, stress, panic, trauma, sadness, shame and grief) are anxiety-based.


The basal brain initiates our psychological processes. The signal passes through the limbic system where an emotional response is added. Finally, the emotionally charged signal reaches our neocortex and we bceome conscously aware of the sitation and our emotional response to the situation. By the time our conscious mind is aware of what's going on, our body is already responding to the limbic system's emotional response. So, if for example, the limbic system elicits an anger response, our body is already generating anger before we become aware that we are angry. Our conscious mind can't do much about it because (1) the anger because it is already happening, and (2) it is an undeniable reality that cannot be denied, so all we can consciously do is to wait for our anger response to calm down.


The activation of these inappropriate and unhelpful emotional responses can be "nipped in the bud" before they blossom into a full body conscious experience. This is where BWRT can work its psychological "magic"... It works directly within the half-second "cognitive gap" to replace the unwanted response with whatever the client prefers. As as long as the client can think about the problem, BWRT can resolve it!
